|SHERRILL MILNES, Metropolitan
Opera Star and world renowned Baritone
In 1963, early in his career, Sherill Milnes sang in Downers Grove for the Downers Grove Concert Association. He has been back in Downers Grove many times since, the last time for the 150th anniversary of the Congregational Church in 1991.
Sherrill grew up on a dairy farm in Downers Grove, Ill., and despite a childhood with much time devoted to daily chores, he studied piano, violin, viola, double bass, clarinet and tuba besides voice. But when it came time for college, he could see no future in music and pursued pre-med studies. After a year and a half, however, he enrolled at Drake University, where he studied with Andrew White, and earned bachelor's and master's degrees in music education, hoping to become a teacher. Additional graduate studies, with Hermanus Baer, followed at Northwestern University.
|Sherrill Milnes was universally acclaimed as the foremost operatic baritone and one of the most popular and electrifying performers before the public. A superstar in every sense, he is sought by every major opera house and orchestra in the world.|
