In 1949, the third season of the Association, harpist Mildred Dilling performed in Downers Grove. After the concert she graciously greeted people on stage. The harp fascinated the children in the audience. Ms. Dilling was willing to let the children pluck her harp. She explained all the details of her playing.

Mildred Dilling brought harp music to thousands of audiences throughout the United States and Canada as a touring artist for the Community Concerts series; she was also a frequent soloist in Europe and in the Far East.

In addition to these many live concert appearances, Mildred Dilling spent a year performing a weekly radio program on CBS preceding its broadcast of the New York Philharmonic.

Dilling is probably best known among today's generation of harpists as the author of the popular and enduring music books Thirty Little Classics and Old Tunes for New Harpists.

As a concert soloist in the earlier and middle part of this century, however, Dilling should also be remembered for her crucial role in popularizing the harp as a solo instrument.
