In 1979, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra performed in Downers Grove under its conductor Kurt Masur. Their management owed the Association a favor, and since the orchestra was in the area, a concert was arranged at a mutually agreeable rate. There were approximately 100 members in the orchestra. The concert was held in the Johnson Auditorium of the Downers Grove North High School, and it was a real challenge to fit the 100-piece orchestra on the stage!
