| February 25, 2001 Jörg Hempel, baritone; and Alexander Schmalcz, piano Jörg Hempel, born in Dresden in 1969, entered the renowned Dresden Kreuzchor when only ten years old. During the following years, he continued his vocal studies with well-known teachers and coaches in Germany and Italy. |

| Mr. Hempel won first prize at the Antonin Dvorak International
Competition in the Czech Republic when he was only 22 years old. In 1996, he made his
London debut participating in the Young-Songmakers Public Concert directed by Graham
Johnson. He has participated in master classes with many famous artists such as Theo Adam,
Brigitte, Fassbänder, Irwin Gage, Graham Johnson, Thomas Quasthoff, Peter Schreier, and
Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. Mr. Hempel apperars often in recital throughout Germany and Italy in addition to his appearances as soloist in choral performances with conductors such as Nicholas McGegan and Helmuth Rilling. He has appeared with orchestras in Austria, Israel, Denmark, France, Italy, Poland, and Switzerland; and has been engaged at several European opera houses. He made his North American debut with Houston Symphony in November 1999, in a performance of Bachs B minor Mass, conducted by Peter Schreier; followed by performances of St. Matthew Passion in San Francisco and Chicago. |
