|AMSTERDAM LOEKI STARDUST QUARTET, recorder
The Amsterdam Loeki Stardust Quartet has played in Downers Grove on two occasions, first in 1992 and the second time in 2000. In fact, in February 2000 the Quartet played two concerts. The first was a full concert entitled "Fugue Around the Clock," the second, was a special children's concert and demonstration, co-organized with the Downers Grove Park District. The children were in awe of the playing as well as the instruments. The artists allowed the children to touch the recorders as they explained the history and sounds of the instrument.
|The Amsterdam Loeki Stardust Quartet was founded in
1978 when its four recorder players Daniel Bruggen, Bertho Driever, Paul Leenhouts, and
Karel van Steenhoven were students at the Sweelinck Academy of Music in Amsterdam.
Their efforts toward exploring the boundaries of the recorder consort were rewarded at the 1981 Musica Antiqua Competition in Bruges when, challenging the competition rules with the performance of an unusual arrangement of a Stevie Wonder song, they emerged as the winners! The Quartet has thus won recognition as a serious ensemble of unparalleled virtuosity.
The group has assembled a unique collection of over a hundred Renaissance, Baroque, and modern recorders. They range from the 8-inch sopranino to the subcontrabase, measuring over nine-feet.
